The Smashing Pumpkins- Tonight Tonight
Sometimes I forget how much this video, this song, and indeed even this band, means to me.
There is something truly magical here. Something bigger than I could grasp when I first saw it, but still the same thing that resonates with me now.
The video is directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, who also made the videos for 1979, Perfect, Rocket, the Red Hot Chili Peppers Otherside and Californication, and as they are probably best known for now, Little Miss Sunshine. It was conceptualised in collaboration with Corgan. Upon wanting to extend the visuals of the album art, they all realised the similarity to the work of Georges Méliès and the decision was made to recreate his film A Trip to the Moon. At last knowledge, the sets still live in D’arcy’s barn.
Please watch, and if you haven’t seen them, watch some of their other videos too, because regardless of your thoughts on the band, they surely are responsible for more great music videos than almost any other single band I can think of. Plus, the husband on the moon voyage is the voice of Spongebob Squarepants, what’s not to love.
